Google Introduces Shopping Ads on Image Search

Google introduced shopping ads on image search as their latest development in its search advertising product, just ahead of their annual developer conference this week.

Users browsing through Google image search results will be able to see ads for related products at the top of the search results, above organic listings. The ads can be filtered with Google's filter buttons, same as organic images, allowing shoppers to narrow down their search and get redirected to the retailer that sells the product they are looking for.

Why? According to Google, users who search and shop on their smartphones at least once a week see product images as the feature they rely upon the most. The new product ads feature hopes to answer user questions such as how much does the product cost, or where can I buy it from, right from the image search.

According to Google's Monday announcement, shopping ads are automatically eligible to show on image search as part of the Google Search Network.

Shopfronts meet mobile technology

Posted by Steve.Rivers on Oct 11, 2012 12:41:48 PM

One of the major difficulties for retailers both large and small is knowing how best to divide budget and work between the bricks-and-mortar and online spaces. Online retail draws no foot traffic, whilst bricks-and-mortar retail demands an awful lot more money and space. This article from Canada's Montreal Gazette explains how the most innovative retail brands are combining the two. "A twin helix of traditional window shopping and anti-social e-commerce, these small displays feature photos or samples of products that, when scanned with a smartphone, redirect shoppers to an online purchase site."

Google Wallet gets smarter

Google is expanding its dominance of retail, ecommerce and plain old commerce by improving its mobile payment system Google Wallet to work with all major credit cards. Google Wallet will also begin transitioning to a cloud-based model. Using the system users can now tap their smartphones to pay at an in-store retail checkout rather than having to use cards or cash. Although the technology has experienced wide usage in parts of East Asia, it hasn’t yet gained the necessary momentum in the U.S or Europe. But Google plans to change all that by allowing usage with all major credit cards as opposed to, previously, just Citibank accounts and MasterCard.
