Retail shopping tool, Polyvore, shut down without warning earlier this month after being acquired by high-end retailer, Ssense.

The move angered and upset Polyvore users, who had used the site to create mood boards and outfit collages, complaining that they were not given warning, or a way to save their content easily. However, users do have until the 10th May 2018 to download their content. Some users had used the site for multiple years, creating content and building relationships with other users.

The website now redirects to the Ssense store and in a note to its community, they said the app and business operations had been discontinued.

Ssense’s motivation was most likely to acquire its engaged userbase, but have ironically irritated the very customers they were trying to reach with many refusing to shop on their website. Polyvore was well known and loved amongst its userbase, and this move serves as a stark reminder of the importance of good customer management in the ecommerce space.
